Scroll down to see the Firebird fresh out of the paint
booth.
The 69 now has all of the rear section sheetmetal installed. We
have begun to strip the paint to see what we will find. Here you
can see that some patch work was performed at one time to the rear
section.
This is a sneek-peek into the trunk to see the new pans. At this
point we will begin to concentrate on the front of the car.
We noticed some rot at the bottom of the windshield. We had to
remove the windshield and we will begin to peel back the layers of
sheetmetal to get past the rust.
As you can see, the rust runs pretty much the full width of the
lower dash panel. Luckily, this panel is available from GM
Restoration Parts. We will cut this panel out and remove all
rusted steel from under the dash panel.
Here is Steve cutting back the layers of the rusted sheetmetal.
Once we get all of the rust out, we will make new panels to weld
into place.
Here is Craig removing the padded dash in preparation to remove
the dash panel. We should receive the new panel next week . .
. I can't wait to see it!
It is a little hard to see in this picture, but the metal
is rotted above the windshield wiper mounts. We will fabricate
patch panels to support this area prior to installing the new dash
panel.
Here is a partial patch clamped into place. Craig will weld this
into place and fabricate the remainder of patch panels needed to
correct this problem.
Craig welded in the patch panel and ground down all of the
welds. The windshield wiper mounts are now good and solid and all
of the rust is gone from this area.
Jack's new engine and trans arrives and is prepped for installation.
